Are roll ups on your aerial wishlist? The single wrap or flag olé roll up is next in our C shaping series

In this issue:

  • Movement of the month - C-shaping series part 4: Single wrap roll up AKA Flag olé
  • Work with me - I'm currently taking a holiday but if you want your aerial practice to flourish in 2024, I've got a 3 month online coaching package starting in March - read on for more info or join my waitlist!
  • Blog - Becoming the aerialist you are - if we take away the (unhelpful) notion that we 'should' be striving towards a generic gold standard, what kind of aerialist do you really want to be?

Here's the bit of the newsletter where I welcome new subscribers (thanks for joining us!) and routinely apologise to everyone that this issue is later than planned (two months later, in fact 🤦‍♀️). Truth is, I had a bit of a burnout episode from late November to late December. While I found myself able to show up with full presence when teaching, the rest of the time I wanted to sleep and/or watch Netflix and eat potatoes. It was hard and humbling because I was/am the kid that always did their homework and the extra reading too. But lessons have been learned, and next year I'm going to plan for and enthusiastically embrace a seasonal timeout. Meanwhile, are you ready to roll? Because... drum roll (#seewhatididthere) the next instalment of our C-shaping series is here!

Movement of the month

Ahh C-shaping, the skill that can be so useful yet so humbling, difficult and SQUEEZY. We started this series by looking at floor drills to understand the pathways and engagements without the squeeze, took that information to the air with the teardrop roll down from a hip key and then amped up the squeeze tolerance with a C-shape roll down from a beehive wrap. Now it's time to think about going UP (and yes, getting more squozed). Of course you can start doing this in your C-shape roll down by trying incremental slow reverses - rolling down a tiny way then seeing if you can roll back up along the reverse pathway, making the increments greater each time. But the single wrap/flag olé can be a super useful skill to start including in your C-shaping training.

Now here's the thing - the roll up in this wrap can be done
slowly or fast. The slow version utilises C-shaping proper, but the fast rolling version is a subtly different technique (in the same stable as hip key roll ups or spinning flare to flag). In keeping with this C-shaping series we're looking at the slow version here. And full disclosure - I can only do the fast version (largely because of my old long legs/short torso imbalance issue). So a lovely friend and student kindly agreed to demo this for me. Go check out Laura @asmallscientist if you don't follow her already! Meanwhile I've provided the floor and sling drills if you need some co-gressions for this skill!

Online lessons

I'm currently taking a break from all teaching until Feb to focus on my own practice. Existing clients then have privileged access to my calendar until mid March, when I'm excited to announce my first three month online coaching package goes live!

Flourish will comprise 6 x online private lessons + training plan with 6 x group theory workshops. Flourish is suitable for all existing students. It will be the only way to work with me 1:1 until mid June. I'll be releasing all the juicy details to my waitlist first, including big early bird discounts, so click the button below if you'd like to work with me in 2024!

What kind of aerialist do you want to be?

Last year, I had a crisis of confidence in the kind of aerialist I thought I was, compared with the one I thought I should be. I worked my way through it and here’s some re-framing that helped me make my peace with the many competing demands of an athletic artform.

Happy rolling into 2024 - Jess

PS Flourish is my 12 week 1:1 online coaching care package which will run from 18 March - 8 June. Spots will be super limited because there's only one of me (even though Cai loves to 'help' with my coaching schedule). You can read more about it and sign up for the waitlist here. Full details will be released to the waitlist first!

PPS I'm super excited to be part of Alex Allan and PJ Perry's Rope Lab 200 hour teacher training cohort this year as my main CPD focus. (I first did dynamic rope teacher training with Alex back in 2020.) it's going to be an intense year! I know some of you fellow coaches are also signed up and I'm looking forward to getting stuck into some solid rope nerding with you all and the other participants.
