Does C-shaping sometimes spook you out? 👻 This month we're looking at sloooooooow C-shape roll downs.

In this issue:

  • Movement of the month - C-shape roll down (bee hive wrap)
  • Work with me - last slots for 1:1s available Nov-Dec before I close doors for a long break
  • Blog - On owning your own aerial training journey - how do you keep the joy in your practice while acquiring hard skills, and do you even need those skills?

🎃 Welcome to the October edition of the Awyrol newsletter. Am I jumping on the Halloween bandwagon by sending it out on Oct 31st? Nope. No. I just had a lot of other deadlines to clear first. Urgh, deadlines. That sounds like the punchline for a Halloween joke that hasn't been written yet. Meanwhile, how's your C-shaping going?

Movement of the month

So far in the MoTM C-shaping series we've looked at floor drills to understand the pathways and engagements, and then taken some of that information to the air with the teardrop roll down from a hip key. This month, let's take a look at the C-shape roll down. This slow roll down starts in a bee hive wrap and is essentially - you've guessed it - one long slow reverse roll up. If you can really control your descent through using your C-shaping pathways and engagement (i.e. using them to resist gravity and a wrap that really really wants to tip you out fast onto the mat!) then you're helping to develop the necessary strength, timing and understanding to roll UP. As usual, I've included the cues and technical information in the video voiceover and notes in the video description. But a strong note of caution - if you've never done this before, then set up the wrap close to the mat to get a feel for it and understand the not-inconsiderable work required to resist rolling out fast.

If you're new to the newsletter, I've compiled all the previous Movements of the Month into a back catalogue showcase on Vimeo which you can access using the link below. The current password is 4utumn-23-!* These include the Breakbreats Break-down series parts 1-4, and the C-shaping series parts 1-3.

Online coaching package

- access to your own
video library with detailed notes
- suggested homework
training plan to help focus your time between lessons
-
form checks you can send me training videos (5 mins max per fortnight) in between sessions for voice over commentary.

Why invest in 1:1 coaching with me to support your aerial practice?

Even though good coaching can feel like a big financial leap for some students, it can actually be a huge saving in time and frustration in comparison to working unguided towards specific goals. Or working with coaches that have a different focus or level of expertise than what you are working towards. I would 100% recommend Jess under my list of high value coaches." - Carolina

Why do you want to train THAT skill? Why, why indeed. It can be so easy to get swept up on the tide of wanting a popular technical skill, or to think that you've got to achieve a particular skill 'milestone' before you have fully and finally arrived as an aerialist. Here I offer some questions that might help you assess what you really want or need from the skills you think you should be training...

Happy Halloween!
Jess

PS I love meeting up with prospective online students via Zoom for an informal chat about your goals ahead of anyone committing to working with me - it's really important to me that you work with the right coach for YOU! You can book one of these 20 minute meet up sessions by submitting a short application form and I'll send you a scheduling link.

PPS Fun Halloween fact. When I was a child, we couldn't always come by pumpkins for Halloween in West Wales. So, one year my mother CARVED A LARGE SWEDE as my Halloween lantern. Now I look back and understand how incredibly hard swedes are, I realise this was a truly valiant act of parenting. Also, it STANK once the candle got going in there.
