Confession: I procrastinate training ๐ซฃ
Published about 1 month agoย โขย 4 min read
Hey Reader, โ
I'm here to talk about something that looms very large in my life: procrastination. So scroll on down for that. โ Before I do, here's the reminder that we are now into the final 48 hours of enrolment for this cycle of Flourishonline coaching. If a three month immersive 1:1 coaching experience isn't of interest, this cycle there's also a group-only strand, for the same accountability, support, creative inspiration and nerdery without the 1:1 lessons (and therefore, less money). You can read allll about it here, or skip straight to the different strand options here. โ And as always if you DON'T want to get any more Flourish emails you can optout here:
Life seems to be FULL of everyday things it takes a LOT of energy to make ourselves DO. Cleaning, accounts, sorting through the 5000000 training videos on your phone... URGH. The dopamine downers that beg to be procrastinated. (Side note: surprisingly I'm actually really good at laundry. Laundry is my superpower, against all the odds, everyone always has clean pants on my watch. Sometimes laundry and coffee seem to be my most successful consistencies.)โ โ โBut one of the endless mysteries to me in recent years is how good I got at procrastinating something i actually love: aerial training.โ โ Why? โ I think it's to do with... caring too much. (Also overwhelm. Also failure --> I'm going to elaborate) โ As one of the many deeply wise things I've learned from the Audacity Works podcast (yes, yet another h/t to Rachel Strickland, I'm a big fan obvs), is that: โ โwe don't procrastinate the THING, we procrastinate the UNCOMFORTABLE FEELINGS associated with the thing. โโ โmic. drop ๐ณ
So I think i procrastinate training because, on some deep subconscious level, I'm SCARED:
scared of disappointing myself
scared of not being 'good enough' (according to some impossible standard I'll never attain)
scared of it not feeling satisfying (especially the hard things that are still helpful to train)
scared of my body resisting
scared of one of the very few things i have loved SO MUCH becoming something i don't love โ
AND I procrastinate training because there is so much - creative, skills, sequencing - i'm OVERWHELMED...
โ โIn order to train these days, I've had to ADULT myself into insisting on three things: โ โa VERY simple TRAINING PLAN - nervous system-first warm up, lowest effective dose conditioning, 2-4 skills and/or 1-2 simple creative tasks - if i add on, great. But less is more as a baseline.
โto set 2-3 INTENTIONS for the session - to manage my expectations/metrics for success; I used to think this was pretentious AF, but it actually helps. Who knew? โ โa RITUAL to start my warm up - usually a playlist but can also include light, smell, food or other things to ensure I've got a good sensory set up and i'm feeling well nourished. โ Now OBVIOUSLY this is going to segue into me talking about my own coaching - because I'm hardly going to devise strategies that have helped me without at least wondering if they might help the folks who work with me...
๐Flourish is the grown up ๐ซฑ
I know that the most transformative, productive times in my adult life have been when i've been doing a course that:
guides me through an experience or takes me on a journey
gently makes me do the work that I do, in fact, want to do
helps me identify and balance my weaknesses and strengths
encourages me to address some things I hadn't even thought about
holds space for me to mess up but keeps me on track
โ Drawing from my most positive learning experiences, I designed Flourish as a container that does all these things: holds space for you - holds your hand to - show up for your practice. โ It does this through:
๐30 min 1:1 check in callโ โ๐6 x biweekly group classes - off-apparatus, including reflective assignments, movement and bodywork, consistency strategies, goal setting, building rituals, choreographic practice... โ๐weekly creative prompts - SIMPLE, short explorations to add into your week's training โ๐masterclass library - lifetime access to >15 technique workhops and masterclasses โ๐weekly study group prompts - to keep you accountable to watching the library content! โ๐WhatsApp community - peer support and accountability
โ PLUS the option of: โ๐3 x 1:1 lessons - real-time cueing and feedback for your skills or creative practice lesson recording with training plan - to guide your independent practice โ๐unlimited video feedbackโ โ๐unlimited WhatsApp 1:1 support โ
What do past students have to say about my coaching?

Jess is an amazing coach and rope artist. She gives great cues and has the ability to tailor feedback and drills to your needs and body type. You can tell that she is dedicated to her work and is invested in her student's success. Working with her has definitely been one of the best investments I have made towards my aerial training. I highly recommend working with her if you have the opportunity!

Flourish encouraged me to invest in myself the way I invest in my students. Jess listened to my goals and helped me access difficult pathways with unending positivity and kindness. I felt like I had an invested partner to hold me accountable to my progress, including the wins. It was a nurturing experience and I recommend it for anyone regardless of where you are on your journey!

Hey everyone,Flourish is still enrolling (but only for 36 more hours - you can get in on that here!) and one of my favourite things about onboarding is asking Flourish students to DM me their aerial mood board - that's up to 10 IG reels or posts which give me a sense of their current interests and goals. Because most aerialists tend to have a shopping list of 500000 skills, I stipulate ONLY 3 skills with the rest focusing on movement quality, choreographic detail, values, whimsy or anything...
