Hard skills need soft skills πŸͺ½

Hey Reader,

OK I'm here to talk about SKILLS: aerial skills AND all the other skills we use and need to function and feel fulfilled as aerialists...

But first, a little housekeeping... if you missed my earlier email, I'm excited to announce that doors to my online coaching programme Flourish are now OPEN to the public for the fall/autumn cycle! You can read more about it here

And if you want to hear nothing more about it you can:

HARD AF skills needs soft AF skills πŸͺ½ what does THAT mean?

I once read the term emotion work in a feminist essay; giving weight to the invisible but massive emotional labour that underpins marriage.

(Not a bad analogy. I've definitely felt married to my aerial practice at times 😏)

We spend a lot of time tending our meathooks, drilling our beats, building our spin tolerance... but maybe not so much on, for example, the old frustration tolerance for when sh*t happens.

Which it will...because life:

A lot of the time we're just winging it: our practice = 'that thing when we're training'. But it isn't necessarily resilient...

But what if we had a toolkit to consciously grow a practice that has solid roots and supple branches? That can weather the storm AND keep adapting to meet our needs? That allows us to be versatile, adaptable, gives space to ALL our interests, nurtures all of ourselves over time...?

I've re-designed my online coaching programme Flourish because it's my experience as coach that folks learn skills better, can access creativity when they have a solid support structure - a solid practice - to grow from.

And I want to teach folks how to build a practice ALONGSIDE coaching the aerial skills inside it!

This is how Flourish works as a programme over three months:

GROUP CLASSES (x 6 /off apparatus) to: audit your practice, identify weakspots, strategies for time and expectation management, metrics for success and consistency and prompts to develop creative capacity and movement quality.

NERDY RESOURCES - lifetime access to a masterclass library of >12 deep dive masterclasses and workshops on a range of topics from dynamic and rolling technique, tackling nemesis skills, transitions and sequencing, broadening vocab... with a WhatsApp study group focusing on a new topic every week to keep you accountable to watching the recordings!

1:1 COACHING (3 x 1 hour sessions) - for skill acquisition work (rope or sling) tailored to your own goals OR creative mentorship (any apparatus) - detailed focus on a creative process or movement.

With TWO OPTIONS for participation: a GROUP-only strand (minus 1:1 coaching) OR the FULL 1:1 strand for coaching and/or mentorship

And what's my coaching like?! This is what past and present student have to say:

"I would absolutely recommend Jess as a coach and the entire Flourish programme! Jess has such a detailed and technical approach to skills which enables her to cue one tiny detail and suddenly unlock a previously-impossible thing. She provides such in-depth feedback which makes training a delight - even the really difficult things! The Flourish masterclasses cover a wide range of interesting topics and Jess makes it easy to access all this extra nerdy goodness. She is a brilliant coach and all-around fantastic human who has enhanced my own personal sling training immensely! - Sally

Jess made the planning, execution and achieving of new skills seem effortless. She helped me get further in touch with my body awareness & technique and was so encouraging and warm along the way. I also feel more knowledgeable about dynamic movements and how my body should feel when executing them. My form has improved and I feel stronger and safer in my body.

Jess is a detailed and conscientious teacher who pays attention to your specific needs... She is able help you with a productive lesson even when you have low energy / mood days. The is very knowledgeable on the relationship between the body movement and the aerial apparatus and pays a lot of attention to detail... she is very skilled at helping her student overcome roadblocks in skill training

I've worked with Jess for the past 2 years on my rope practice and she has been THE most kind, knowledgeable, and patient instructor. She always seems to know the right corrections, the right cues, and the right progressions/regressions for things. I wholeheartedly recommend her.

- Mina

"Consistency and accountability worked really well for me. I've gained the building blocks for the skills I want to learn and more importantly i've built the habit of putting the conditioning and drills into my everyday practice" - Emma

Warmest wishes from West Wales,
Jess

Hey everyone,Flourish is still enrolling (but only for 36 more hours - you can get in on that here!) and one of my favourite things about onboarding is asking Flourish students to DM me their aerial mood board - that's up to 10 IG reels or posts which give me a sense of their current interests and goals. Because most aerialists tend to have a shopping list of 500000 skills, I stipulate ONLY 3 skills with the rest focusing on movement quality, choreographic detail, values, whimsy or anything...
